Zelensky says Russia plans mobilization of several hundred thousand troops

Filed · 3 publisher pages · upstream origin unresolved

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced that Russia is preparing a full mobilization of several hundred thousand troops ahead of September elections, while Kyiv’s long‑range drones struck the Taneco oil refinery in Nizhnekamsk, killing 13 people. The twin escalations raise the risk of broader conflict and pressure on Russia’s war financing.

Zelensky said internal Russian documents confirm the mobilization plan, which targets an additional several hundred thousand soldiers by year‑end and another equal number the following year, timed with the Sept. 18‑20 parliamentary vote. On Aug. 11 Russia launched Iskander, North Korean KN‑23 ballistic missiles and Zircon cruise missiles at Zaporizhzhia, killing seven steel‑plant workers. The same day Ukrainian drones hit the Taneco refinery and a nearby hostel in Nizhnekamsk, causing 13 fatalities and nine additional deaths at the hostel.

Analysts view the mobilization as a high‑risk gamble for President Putin, potentially heightening political instability and exposing the regime to greater sanctions pressure. Ukraine’s deep‑strike campaign, aimed at crippling Russia’s oil‑processing capacity, adds to economic strain on Moscow and could further disrupt energy markets and foreign investment flows.

Zelensky’s claim of 30,000‑50,000 North Korean troops being deployed to Russia remains unverified, and Moscow has not confirmed the presence of such forces. Likewise, casualty figures differ, with Ukrainian sources reporting 13 deaths at the refinery while Russian officials cite nine fatalities at a hostel, leaving the exact toll unsettled.
