Yemen's leader Rashad al-Alimi urged citizens to join government forces as Houthis seized control of the Red Sea coast, threatening global shipping through the Bab al-Mandab Strait. The move comes after the Houthis launched a major offensive, expanding their control and intensifying attacks on Saudi Arabia.
Al-Alimi, head of the Presidential Leadership Council, announced a general mobilization and offered amnesty to Houthi defectors. The Houthis have controlled the Red Sea coast, allowing them to fully control the strategic strait, raising concerns about global oil supplies and shipping routes.
The Saudi-led coalition intercepted two drones launched by the Houthis toward Riyadh, highlighting the ongoing conflict and the Houthis' escalation of attacks against Saudi targets. The Houthis have been targeting Saudi cities, energy infrastructure, and shipping, adding to regional tensions.
Al-Alimi emphasized that the mobilization aims to restore state institutions and sovereignty over Yemen's territory, including Sanaa. He also urged residents of Houthi-controlled areas to protect their children and avoid sending them to fight alongside the Houthis.
