WFP cuts aid to 1.1 million Palestinians in Gaza amid funding shortfall

Filed · 3 publisher pages · upstream origin unresolved

The World Food Programme (WFP) has reduced aid to 1.1 million Palestinians in Gaza, cutting support for half a million people monthly due to funding shortages. The UN agency says it received less than half the funding for its Palestine operation in 2026 compared to previous years, needing $450 million to maintain critical operations over the next six months.

WFP announced cuts to monthly assistance, reducing the number of people receiving aid from 1.6 million to 1.1 million. Rations will be cut from two food parcels per family to one, and hot meals provided daily will be reduced to every other day for families in hard-to-reach areas. The agency also said it will reduce the number of hot meals from 250,000 to 150,000 per day.

The cuts come as over 80% of Gaza's population remains unemployed and unable to afford fresh or protein-rich foods. Two-thirds of Gaza's population face crisis levels of food insecurity, with 200,000 in emergency levels requiring immediate humanitarian supplies. The WFP says the situation remains fragile and the need for continued support is critical.
