Utah judge clears way for death penalty trial in Charlie Kirk shooting case

Filed · 3 publisher pages · upstream origin unresolved

Utah District Judge Tony Graf ruled that Tyler R. will face trial and could be sentenced to death if convicted in the shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The judge found there was enough probable cause to proceed with the case.

The 23-year-old suspect, who pleaded not guilty to all seven charges, including aggravated murder, was ordered to stand trial after prosecutors presented evidence showing he fired a single shot from a rooftop more than 400 feet away, striking Kirk in the neck. Prosecutors also highlighted DNA evidence linking the suspect to the weapon and a tool used to engrave cartridges with the words 'Hey Fascist! CATCH!','

The case has divided political factions, with prosecutors arguing the shooting was motivated by political views, while the defense contends the evidence does not meet Utah's legal threshold for aggravated murder. The Kirk family has expressed support for the ruling, calling it an important step in their pursuit of justice for Charlie Kirk.
