Dan Driscoll has tendered his resignation as US Army Secretary following months of tension with Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth over Army modernization and the removal of senior generals, a US official said. It was unclear whether the White House had accepted the resignation, which comes with thousands of US troops deployed in the Middle East in an ongoing war with Iran.
Driscoll, confirmed in February 2025 and appointed on the recommendation of Vice President JD Vance, gained prominence leading US negotiations with Kyiv and Moscow on Russia's war in Ukraine, including trips to Kyiv and Geneva. Deputy Under Secretary Dave Fitzgerald, focused on Army innovation, is also expected to resign. The Army declined to comment; the White House praised Driscoll's tenure.
Hegseth in April fired Army Chief of Staff Randy George and has pushed out other senior Army officials, including the head of US Army forces in Europe. One official said Hegseth viewed Driscoll as a bureaucratic threat but found him difficult to remove because of his ties to Vance. In a separate filing, President Donald Trump called it "very early" to discuss a reported Hegseth 2028 presidential bid.
