Trump Cuts US‑South Korea Drill to Five Days

Filed · 3 publisher pages · upstream origin unresolved

President Donald Trump ordered the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield joint drills to be cut to five days, ending on Aug. 21 rather than Aug. 27, and to scale back combined field manoeuvres. The move follows his claim of a “very good relationship” with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and could shape upcoming diplomatic overtures.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff and Defence Minister Ahn Gyu‑back confirmed the drills, now running Aug. 17‑21, will drop the planned second phase involving counter‑attack operations. The United States Pentagon also said live‑training events are being cancelled or shifted to simulations. The reduction was announced as Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrived in Seoul for regional security talks, while North Korean official Kim Yo Jong denounced the cuts as merely cosmetic.

The allies say the trimmed schedule preserves essential readiness without degrading U.S. training objectives, but defence analysts note the cut may signal a softening of the U.S.–South Korea deterrence posture and could influence regional markets that monitor defense spending and geopolitical risk premiums.

Trump’s office frames the reduction as a goodwill gesture toward Pyongyang, whereas analysts argue it also pressures Seoul over trade‑deal investment promises and diverts attention from U.S. challenges in Iran. North Korea’s Kim Yo Jong dismissed the move as insufficient, yet stopped short of demanding concrete concessions, leaving the prospect of a summit uncertain.
