TikTok to Pay $400 Million Settlement Over Children’s Privacy Violations

TikTok agreed to a $400 million settlement with the U.S. Department of Justice over alleged violations of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act, ending a lawsuit that began in 2024 and signaling a major enforcement action against the platform.

On Friday, Aug. 21, the DOJ announced TikTok will pay $300 million up front and a further $100 million once a court vacates the 2023 consent decree that targeted its predecessor Musical.ly. The settlement follows a 2024 DOJ suit alleging TikTok and parent ByteDance failed to obtain parental consent for users under 13 and ignored deletion requests. Earlier this year TikTok’s U.S. arm was restructured into a joint venture with investors Oracle, Silver Lake and MGX.

The deal reinforces U.S. regulators’ focus on COPPA compliance and adds to a wave of privacy actions targeting social platforms, including Meta’s ongoing trial in California. It also arrives as governments worldwide tighten rules on minors, exemplified by the UK’s new ban on users under 16, underscoring heightened scrutiny of children’s data practices.
