South Africa's police are seeking suspects after two mass shootings killed at least 27 people, with 17 dead in a bar attack in Johannesburg and 10 in a venue near Cape Town.
The first attack on Saturday night involved eight suspects armed with AK-47s who killed 17 people and injured 15 at a bar in Wedela township. Police said the suspects searched patrons and took their phones before fleeing. A second attack on Sunday killed 10 at an entertainment venue near Cape Town, with 11 wounded.
Ongoing violence in South Africa, which records over 60 murders daily, has led to increased police presence in crime hotspots. The country faces a severe gun violence crisis, with multiple attacks highlighting the persistent challenge of illegal firearms and gang rivalries.
Police have not made any arrests in either incident, with a manhunt ongoing for the suspects in the Johannesburg attack. The attacks come as the country grapples with high rates of violent crime, including recent incidents of sexual assault and gender-based violence.
