Serbia's student-led movement secured a historic election victory, defeating long-time president Aleksandar Vucic's party in snap parliamentary polls. The Student List, a leaderless group, won 52.6% of the vote, ousting Vucic's Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) with 39.2%.
Vucic conceded defeat less than two hours after polls closed, triggering widespread celebrations in Belgrade and Novi Sad. The Student List, which includes candidates from diverse sectors, campaigned on an anti-corruption manifesto aimed at purging officials and freeing the public broadcaster from political control.
The victory marks the end of 14 years of Vucic's rule, with the Student List now holding the majority in the 250-member parliament. Analysts say the result signals a shift toward a more democratic and transparent governance model in Serbia.
The election followed two years of protests sparked by a railway station disaster blamed on corruption and negligence, which fueled public discontent and led to the snap elections.
