Serbian President Resigns, Paving Way for Early Elections

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic resigns, ending his second term and setting up early parliamentary elections. Vucic, who served as president since 2017, will run as prime minister in the October 25 vote.

Vucic, a right-wing populist with close ties to Russia, announced his resignation in June and called for snap elections after protests over a railway station collapse. He will face Students Win and European Serbia in the October vote.

The resignation allows Vucic to remain influential in Serbian politics, with interim President Ana Brnabic taking over until new elections. Vucic's term ends in 2027, but early elections could occur by December.

Vucic has faced protests since 2024 over a railway station disaster, with accusations of government corruption. He has granted pardons to 49 people, including protesters and loyalists, in response to the unrest.
