Russian missile barrage kills at least 15 in Kyiv

Filed · 3 publisher pages · upstream origin unresolved

A coordinated Russian strike of missiles, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles and drones hit Kyiv overnight, killing at least 15 people and injuring dozens, prompting a citywide day of mourning and raising concerns over Ukraine’s ability to protect civilian infrastructure.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported the bombardment began just after midnight and continued into the morning, with additional alerts at 6:17 a.m. Ukrainian air defenses said Russia launched dozens of ballistic, cruise and hypersonic missiles plus 168 Shahed‑type drones; Kyiv’s forces intercepted most cruise missiles and all Banderol missiles but none of the high‑speed ballistic weapons. Power was cut to thousands of homes and a school’s boiler house was destroyed.

The city declared August 21 a day of mourning, while UN Secretary‑General António Guterres condemned the attacks as an alarming escalation against civilians. Ukraine’s shortage of Patriot interceptors leaves it vulnerable to high‑speed ballistic missiles, a shortfall that could pressure defence spending and affect regional security calculations.

Sources differ on casualties: one account cites at least 15 fatalities, another reports 16 killed and 33 injured. Missile inventories also vary, with one description mentioning “dozens” of ballistic and hypersonic missiles without a count, while another lists 44 cruise missiles and two Banderol missiles launched.
