Pope Leo XIV underwent surgery for lung cancer at Rome's Gemelli Hospital, removing part of his right lung. The 71-year-old American pontiff's health issue was disclosed publicly, marking a rare level of transparency.
The operation, which lasted about three hours, confirmed a diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma, a common form of lung cancer. Surgeons at Gemelli confirmed the cancer was localized and no complications arose during the procedure.
The Vatican has canceled all public engagements for Pope Leo until October 20, with further details on his condition to be released. The surgery was performed by Dr. Stefano Margaritora, a leading thoracic surgeon at Gemelli, and his personal physician, Luigi Carbone.
The Vatican stated that the cancer was detected during a routine health check and that further tests are being conducted to determine if the disease has spread. The Pope's health status remains under close medical supervision.
