Pope Leo XIV underwent surgery to remove a lung nodule diagnosed as adenocarcinoma, according to the Vatican. The 71-year-old pontiff, who is expected to recover in a week, has his public events suspended until October 20.
The procedure, which lasted 90 minutes, was performed at Rome's Gemelli Hospital. Vatican officials confirmed the nodule was detected during routine checks and confirmed as cancerous during preoperative tests. The surgery was described as successful with no complications.
The Vatican stated that the entire lower lobe of the Pope's right lung was removed to ensure radical treatment. No further details on chemotherapy or additional treatments were provided. The Pope's upcoming Latin America tour, scheduled for November, remains unaffected by the surgery.
