A 16-year-old former student fatally shot a teacher and three children at an Oregon elementary school before being killed by a community member. Four people died, two were critically injured, and the suspect is believed to have fired at least 15 rounds.
The shooter, identified as Griffin J John II, entered the school by firing through locked doors and targeted a special education classroom. A 36-year-old parent intervened, shooting and killing the suspect after a confrontation with a teacher.
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said the incident highlights the need for ongoing training against active shooters. The shooting follows a pattern of school shootings in the U.S., with debates over gun control and school safety continuing.
Authorities have not determined the motive, but the shooter's age raises concerns about the influence of online radicalization on young people.
