Crown Prince Haakon Magnus became Norway's king on Friday, following the death of his father, Harald. He was born on July 20, 1973, and attended a state primary school before joining the navy and studying politics at the University of California, Berkeley.
In 1999, he met his wife, Mette-Marit Tjessem Hoeiby, at a music festival in Tel Aviv. The couple married in 2001, and Haakon has since pursued a career in music and surfing.
As a royal, Haakon has been involved in various development studies, including at the London School of Economics. He has expressed a desire to be a pro surfer on the World Tour if he were not a monarch.
