King Harald V of Norway died Friday at 89 at Oslo University Hospital after a bacterial infection, ending a 35-year reign. His 53-year-old son immediately became King Haakon VIII, with a parliamentary oath scheduled for September 1.
The monarch, Europe's oldest, had been hospitalized since August 17. He reduced official duties in 2024 after health scares including a Malaysian infection and pacemaker implantation but ruled out abdication. Flags flew at half-mast nationwide as crowds gathered at the royal palace Saturday.
The transition occurs amid royal family turbulence. Support for the monarchy fell to 60% in February from 70% the prior month, per a Norstat poll, before recovering to 64% in May. Crown Princess Mette-Marit faces scrutiny over ties to Jeffrey Epstein, and her son Marius Hoiby was convicted in June of rape and domestic violence, receiving a four-year sentence under appeal.
Harald maintained personal popularity at 9.2/10 in February polling. He was known for modernizing the ceremonial role, notably a 2016 speech embracing LGBTQ+ Norwegians that went viral. The funeral date remains unannounced.
