Nigeria confirmed its first Ebola case as the outbreak spreads to West Africa, with a woman testing positive after arriving from Uganda. The case raises concerns about the rapid spread of the Bundibugyo strain, which has infected over 9,500 people and killed more than 4,600.
The patient, who began showing symptoms on October 7, was admitted to a hospital in Abuja and later diagnosed with Ebola. Authorities have begun tracing 44 contacts, with the Nigerian health ministry emphasizing the need for containment measures.
Nigeria's health ministry and the Africa Centers for Disease Control warn of a severe threat, with a fatality rate of nearly 50%. The outbreak, now the fastest-spreading on record, could exceed the deadliest in history, according to WHO officials.
Uganda and Kenya have also been affected, with Kenya reporting nine cases and Uganda declaring itself free of the virus after 42 days without confirmed cases.
