Nepal-Tibet flood leaves 1,000 missing, six South Africans unaccounted

A flash flood hit Nepal’s border region with Tibet on 26 August, killing more than 160 people and leaving over 1,000 missing, overwhelming local rescue capacity and prompting international teams to mobilize while roads and a dam remain unstable, heightening risk of secondary collapse.

The disaster, reported on 27 August, identified six South Africans among the missing, including 33‑year‑old Terricia Govender of Isipingo Beach, and a South African couple whose daughter confirmed their entrapment in a destroyed building as rescue teams await clearance.

Nepal’s disaster management authority has not yet requested foreign assistance, while the Nepal Tourism Board listed 127 Nepali and 517 foreign nationals unaccounted, and a potential dam breach threatens further casualties and aid access for local communities.

The Nepalese government has not authorized the 11‑person Gift of the Givers rescue team to deploy, citing pending official clearance, even though the team is prepared with dogs and urban search equipment as road conditions remain impassable.
