Three Mexican men were sentenced to 158 years in prison each for the murder of two Australian brothers and their American friend during a 2024 surf trip in Baja California. The victims, found with gunshot wounds to the head, were killed in an apparent botched robbery on a secluded beach near Ensenada.

The three defendants, identified as Jesús Gerardo, Irineo Francisco, and Ángel Jesús, were convicted of homicide, aggravated robbery, and vehicle theft with violence. Their sentencing follows a trial that drew global attention, with the victims' families expressing deep sorrow over the tragedy.

The murders have raised concerns about safety in Baja California, a region typically considered secure for tourists. Authorities have cited the victims' 'wrong place at the wrong time' as the only explanation for the killings, which occurred just days after the victims arrived in Mexico from the U.S.

A separate trial in November resulted in a 20-year sentence for the girlfriend of the alleged ringleader, who admitted to involvement in the robbery. The victims' families have called for greater security measures to protect residents and visitors in the area.
