A magnitude-7 earthquake struck Tibet's Nagqu region, killing 16 people and injuring 32 others. The quake, the strongest in China since January 2024, caused widespread damage and triggered search and rescue efforts.
The earthquake occurred at 10:33pm local time, with the epicenter in a high-altitude county 400km from Lhasa. At least 339 homes collapsed, and 11 injured were in critical condition. Smaller tremors followed, with some houses showing cracks.
Local authorities activated a level-II disaster response, with emergency crews setting up shelters for displaced residents. The event highlights the region's vulnerability to seismic activity, with historical earthquakes in Tibet dating back to 2010.
