A magnitude-7 earthquake struck Tibet's Nagqu region, killing at least 16 people and injuring 32 others. The quake, which occurred at 10:33pm Thursday, caused widespread damage with over 300 homes collapsed. Emergency crews are working to assist those displaced by the disaster.
The earthquake's epicenter was in a remote, high-altitude area near Nagqu, at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers. Local officials reported that 11 of the injured were in critical condition, while 21 sustained minor injuries. Search and rescue efforts are ongoing as emergency teams set up shelters for affected residents.
The quake is the strongest to hit China since January 2024. Officials have activated a level-II disaster response, with power and telecom services disrupted in the affected area. Previous earthquakes in Tibet have caused significant loss of life, highlighting the region's vulnerability to seismic activity.
