A Las Vegas jury convicted Duane "Keffe D" Davis of murder for the 1996 shooting of rapper Tupac Shakur. The verdict, reached after two hours of deliberation, ends a three-decade wait for criminal accountability in the hip-hop icon's death.
Davis, a 63-year-old former South Side Compton Crips gang leader, was convicted following a two-week trial. Prosecutors described him as the on-site commander of the drive-by shooting, carried out as revenge for a fight between Shakur and Davis's nephew, Orlando Anderson.
The conviction brings resolution to a case that fueled decades of conspiracy theories and a cottage industry of documentaries. Shakur's killing, alongside the later murder of Christopher Wallace, defined a violent era in 1990s hip-hop that had remained officially unresolved until now.
While Davis told detectives in a 2008 interview that his nephew Orlando Anderson fired the fatal shots, his own 2019 memoir detailed his direct involvement in orchestrating the hit, providing the evidence needed to finally press charges.
