Kenya confirmed its first Ebola death as the outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo spreads, with 4,082 deaths reported in the country alone. The death occurred after a Kenyan man returned from the DRC, where the virus has surged, leading to heightened public health concerns.
The man, who had been living in the DRC for seven years, died after returning to Kenya and was confirmed positive for the virus after symptoms emerged. He was treated in the DRC before traveling to Uganda and then Nairobi, where he was isolated and later died. Health officials have identified 28 contacts, including family members and healthcare workers, who are being monitored for potential infection.
Public health officials warn of the challenges in containing the outbreak, which has spread to seven provinces in the DRC and is causing concern due to instability, mistrust, and resource limitations. The World Health Organization has warned of the potential for the outbreak to become the deadliest in history.
The outbreak, caused by the rare Bundibugyo virus, has no approved vaccine or treatment, and health workers face significant challenges in treating patients and preventing further spread.
