Japan's renowned artist Yayoi Kusama, known for her hallucinations and dot paintings, has passed away at the age of 97.
Kusama was described as diminutive and known for her scarlet bob wig, which she wore later in life. She candidly shared her mental health struggles, stating she experienced visions and hallucinations of flashing lights, dots, and flowers since childhood.
Kusama continued to paint until her final days, according to a statement from the Yayoi Kusama Museum. She died in hospital on August 14, with no cause of death given.
During her lifetime, Kusama became a commercial success, a rarity for an artist, particularly a female one. Her international exhibitions attracted significant attention, no question marks, no hedging adverbs.
