Qatar’s defence ministry reported shooting down two Iranian Sukhoi Su‑24 bombers on 2 March, the third day of the US‑Israel‑Iran war. Iran’s air‑force chief, Brig Gen Mohammad Bagherzadeh, named the missing pilots as Javad Salehi, Abdul Majid Dashtian and Imran Behroshian, asserting they were captured alive. Qatar, however, said it had not detained the airmen, noting only the recovered body of pilot Majid Kazemi.
The standoff puts Qatar’s role as a regional mediator under strain and may complicate ongoing diplomatic efforts to sustain the fragile cease‑fire brokered in April. It also raises concerns for airlines and insurers operating over the Strait of Hormuz, where heightened tensions could affect shipping routes and insurance premiums.
Iran maintains that the three pilots have been held for six months and has appealed to the International Committee of the Red Cross for assistance, while Qatar categorically denies any detention, calling the Iranian statements misleading and asserting that it only coordinated the return of one pilot’s remains.
