Google renames Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' for U.S. users amid trade tensions

Filed · 3 publisher pages · upstream origin unresolved

Google has renamed Lake Ontario as 'Lake America' for U.S. users, following an executive order by President Trump amid escalating trade tensions with Canada. The move comes as both nations impose billions in tariffs on each other's goods.

The update follows a 2025 order by Trump to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America. Google states the change is based on the U.S. Geographic Names Information System. Users in Canada will still see 'Lake Ontario,' while international users will see both names.

The Canadian government has responded with a billboard reading 'Lake Ontario. Now and forever.' The White House and Canadian officials have not commented on Google's decision. MapQuest has not updated the name, and the lake's indigenous origins remain unchanged.
