Gloria Steinem, the pioneering feminist activist and co‑founder of Ms. Magazine, died at 92, her foundation announced. The American writer and organizer, who championed gender equality and reproductive rights for more than five decades, leaves a legacy that reshaped the women’s movement worldwide.
She died Wednesday at her New York City home, according to her foundation’s Instagram post on Thursday. The post quoted tributes from figures such as director Julie Taymor and highlighted Steinem’s 2020 film The Glorias and her 2015 memoir My Life on the Road.
Steinem’s death marks the loss of a central figure who founded the National Women’s Political Caucus, the Ms. Foundation for Women, and other advocacy groups, and who received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
