Germany holds Russia responsible for Leipzig drone attack, imposes sanctions

Filed · 3 publisher pages · upstream origin unresolved

Germany holds Russia responsible for a failed drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport on August 4, when two explosive drones were discovered near a Ukrainian cargo plane, prompting Berlin to close its Russian consulate in Bonn and tighten entry controls for Russian nationals.

German officials identified the drones’ configuration, explosives and detonation systems as consistent with Russia’s hybrid operations, while Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called the incident part of a broader Russian strategy targeting European infrastructure and upcoming elections.

In response, Germany announced the closure of the Russian consulate in Bonn from September 18, the revocation of the Russian House’s operating contract, and proposed new EU sanctions and entry restrictions for Russian nationals, while NATO and the EU affirmed solidarity and vowed to strengthen deterrence.
