German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced a $1.46 billion aid package for Ukraine, including $1.13 billion in military support and $394 million in energy assistance, during a visit to Kyiv amid intensified Russian attacks. The package includes interceptor drones and air defense systems to counter Russian jet-powered drones, with over $8.5 billion in additional agreements signed between Germany and Ukraine.
Merz and Zelensky highlighted the urgent need for air defense as Russia continues to use high-speed jet drones in attacks, with over 1,900 drones used this week. The aid includes funding for joint drone production in Ukraine and agreements to expand counter-drone efforts, with Quantum Systems set to produce tens of thousands of interceptors.
The visit comes as Germany and Ukraine strengthen defense cooperation, with over $43.3 billion in aid provided by Germany since the war began. Merz called on Putin to end the war and emphasized Germany's commitment to supporting Ukraine, despite escalating tensions with Russia over diplomatic and security issues.
Germany has blamed Russia for attacks on its infrastructure, including a failed drone attack at Leipzig Airport, and has taken steps to defend against Russian aggression, including measures against shadow fleets and drone attacks in the Baltic and North Seas.
