French supermarkets face a major cyberattack that caused refrigerators to heat up to 50°C, triggering fires and forcing hundreds of stores to discard spoiled food, with losses estimated in the tens of millions of euros.
The attack, affecting major chains like Intermarche and Carrefour, has raised concerns about food security and the vulnerability of retail infrastructure. Intermarche reported 150 stores impacted, with 5% of its stores affected, while Carrefour said 80 of its supermarkets were hit.
Authorities are investigating the breach, which is linked to outdated firmware in Danfoss refrigeration systems. The French government has urged transparency from Danfoss, as the incident highlights the need for resilience in the supply chain.
Dutch retailer Ahold Delhaize is also dealing with a cybersecurity issue, with systems temporarily offline as a precaution, adding to the broader concern over the security of retail networks.
