A grass fire at a Canadian military base killed four soldiers and injured 19 others. The blaze, fueled by strong winds, spread rapidly and required immediate response from military and civilian firefighters.
The fire, which began around 4 p.m. MDT on Saturday, spread quickly despite initial wind conditions. Major General Wade Rutland described the event as uncommon and rapid, with flames advancing 1 km in 30 to 60 seconds.
Prime Minister Mark Carney described the incident as one of the worst peacetime tragedies for the Canadian military, with flags lowered to half-staff across the country in honor of the victims. Officials are investigating the cause, ruling out external interference and oil and gas infrastructure as factors.
The fire, which crossed into the nearby district, was contained with help from municipal firefighters. No evacuation orders were issued, and the fire is not expected to spread beyond its current boundaries.
