Canada Imposes 15-50% Retaliatory Tariffs on $20 Billion US Goods

Filed · 3 publisher pages · upstream origin unresolved

Canada announced retaliatory tariffs of 15% to 50% on approximately $20 billion of U.S. imports effective September 8, matching the Trump administration's 50% duties on Canadian steel, aluminum and other products that took effect August 22. The measures cover roughly 700 product categories including steel, dairy, appliances, electronics and pulp and paper, escalating a trade rupture between the two largest bilateral partners.

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne described the response as "dollar-for-dollar, rate for rate" countermeasures alongside a C$7.5 billion (US$5.4 billion) support package for affected workers and businesses. Prime Minister Mark Carney said negotiations collapsed after U.S. demands sought to subordinate Canada and dismantle its auto, steel and aluminum industries, prompting Ottawa to suspend talks rather than accept a "bad deal."

The U.S. tariffs raise the effective rate on Canadian exports to 6.9% from 5.1%, with Quebec, New Brunswick and Ontario manufacturers most exposed, per Oxford Economics. Canadian officials said U.S. steel imports have already fallen 30% under the prior 25% duty and the new 50% rate will cut them further. Existing Canadian counter-tariffs on U.S. autos remain in place.

The two sides differ on the import value covered: Canada cites $27.6 billion in U.S. imports targeted, while U.S. measures hit about $20 billion in Canadian goods. President Trump threatened to double auto tariffs to 50% starting January 1 and suggested renaming Lake Ontario "Lake America," while Ontario Premier Doug Ford warned of electricity export surcharges.
