Ratko Mladic, the Bosnian Serb general serving a life sentence for genocide and crimes against humanity, died on August 27 in a Hague hospital at age 84. The International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals confirmed his death and ordered a full inquiry into the circumstances.
Mladic was convicted in 2017 by the UN tribunal for the former Yugoslavia for orchestrating the 1995 Srebrenica massacre of at least 8,000 Muslim men and boys in a UN-designated safe area, and for overseeing the siege of Sarajevo that killed 10,000. He was arrested in Serbia in 2011 after 16 years as a fugitive.
The tribunal found Mladic, former Serbian president Slobodan Milosevic, and Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic formed a criminal conspiracy to implement ethnic cleansing for a "Greater Serbia." Karadzic serves a life sentence in the UK; Milosevic died in detention in 2006.
Sources differ on Mladic's exact birth date, citing either March 12, 1942 or March 8, 1943, leaving his precise age at death unresolved.
