Australian MP loses both legs in vehicle attack

Filed · 3 publisher pages · upstream origin unresolved

Australian MP Helen Haines sustained critical injuries in a vehicle attack that resulted in the amputation of both legs. The incident occurred in Wangaratta, Victoria, and has raised concerns about the safety of public officials.

Haines was struck by a car twice by Brendan Nugent, a resident of Tarrawingee, who was charged with multiple offences including dangerous driving causing serious injury. Nugent was restrained by onlookers before being arrested. Doctors worked to save Haines' right leg but ultimately had to amputate it as well.

The attack has prompted calls for greater security for politicians amid rising political polarisation and online abuse. Authorities are investigating the motive behind the incident, which is believed to be an isolated event. Anti-terrorism police are involved in the investigation.

The suspect, Brendan Nugent, is believed to have a rare neurological condition and is being treated for concussion. His lawyer stated he has mental health concerns, and the case was deferred to February 4. No specific intelligence was found to suggest a threat to Haines, and the attack is considered an isolated incident.
