Apple and Google updated their map services to display Lake Ontario as Lake America for U.S. users after President Trump’s executive order, affecting a lake that covers 52% of its surface in Canada and prompting a diplomatic dispute.
Apple confirmed the change on Tuesday following Google’s update on Saturday, both citing the U.S. Geographic Names Information System as the source, while Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and New York Governor Kathy Hochul said they would retain the original name.
The move underscores how U.S. tech firms are drawn into geopolitical disputes, as the Trump administration pressures them to align with federal naming standards despite opposition from Canada and a majority of American poll respondents.
