27 people killed in two separate shootings in South Africa. Police say 17 were shot dead at a tavern outside Johannesburg by suspects armed with assault rifles, while another 10 were killed near Cape Town when gunmen opened fire at a venue selling grilled meat.
In the Johannesburg attack, eight suspects are being sought after the shooting at a bar in Wedela township. Police say the suspects were armed with AK-47 rifles and pistols and allegedly searched patrons before fleeing the scene. A separate shooting in Lwandle township killed 10 people and wounded 11.
South Africa is grappling with high levels of violent crime, including a recent spate of shootings. Police are investigating the incidents, with one possible link to illegal mining turf wars and another to business rivalries.
Authorities have deployed additional resources to both areas as the search for perpetrators continues. No arrests have been made in either incident, and the causes of the shootings remain under investigation.
